Smoke Alarm Legislation in Queensland
The following information is a general summary. Always refer to the official Queensland Government sources for current requirements.
Under Queensland legislation (the Fire Services Act 1990 and the Building Fire Safety Regulation 2008), all Queensland dwellings must have compliant, interconnected, photoelectric smoke alarms installed by 1 January 2027. If you are selling, renting or re-renting a dwelling, you must already have interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms installed.
- •Smoke alarms must be photoelectric and interconnected.
- •Alarms must be installed in every bedroom, in hallways connecting bedrooms, and on every level of a multi-storey dwelling.
- •Smoke alarms must be hard-wired or powered by a non-removable 10-year battery.
- •Alarms must comply with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014.
The regulatory authority for domestic smoke alarm legislation in Queensland is the Queensland Fire Department (QFD). For the most current and detailed requirements, please refer to the official guidance below.
Information reviewed: October 2026. Legislation may change. Always confirm current requirements with the Queensland Fire Department.
Please note: Cenplus Connect does not carry out smoke alarm installations or hold trade licences. We help connect you with an independent local service provider. The provider will assess your property, confirm the proposed work and provide a quotation. Pricing and availability are confirmed by the provider. Submitting an enquiry does not book an appointment or commit you to any work.
